Because of it’s popularity, Pilates is considered a discipline for women and in some cases as treatment for athletes that suffered injuries. What most people don’t know is that this physical fitness system was developed by a man named Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Joseph designed Pilates for men, women, athletes, beginners and even seniors. Weight trainers are using the system to increase flexibility and muscle power. Pilates names the discipline Contrology, because the mind is used to control the muscles. It is also great for weight loss.

For this edition of Sunrise Shape Up, Jennifer Robbins learns about the benefits of pilates for men. It can improve men’s flexibility, strengthen muscles that are not used often, as well as, support their core and posture. Many men may not realize that pilates was developed by a man and it was intended for rehab for injured soldiers during World War I. There are a variety of benefits for both men and women.

Pilates was designed by a German born gymnast and boxer named Joseph Pilates. His exercise system emphasized the development of the core muscle groups (the spine, abdominals, hips and lower back).

For men over 50 years of age, prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases. It's believed that the atrophy (deterioration) of the pelvic floor muscles is a major factor.

"By practicing Pilates, the muscles may be effectively strengthened, and as a result, the risk of prostate cancer may be lessened."

Q.   Is Pilates effective for men?

A.  With its focus on building core strength, Pilates provides a good starting point for men who want to improve their fitness. The exercises help to strengthen the abdomen and back, which is a great foundation for a man to build on if he wants to participate in any type of sport or cross-training.

A man who exercises regularly will likely have very tight, inflexible muscles. Pilates works to sculpt the body from the inside and helps to keep the muscles relaxed. As a result, everyday activities can be performed without putting a strain on the joints. Whether you play golf, baseball, or basketball, you'll feel the impact of a Pilates workout the next time that you play.
